Bone Health Quiz was held at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi on 12 October, 2006.

The ISBMR was established in 1996 and registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act 21, of 1860, on the initiative of the founder chairperson Dr. Ajay Gupta, Nephrologist, Henry Ford Hospital Detroit.

The lack of trained experts in this field in India was the main reason why expatriate Indians like Dr Gupta, Dr. D. Sudhaker Rao (Chief, Bone and Mineral Division, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit), and others, got together with Dr Ambrish Mithal (then a faculty member at the Department of Endocrinology at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow) to give the initial thrust to ISBMR activities. Professor M.M.S. Ahuja (New Delhi) was the guiding force and founder President of the Society.

The objectives of the India Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR) are to promote research and disseminate knowledge about metabolic bone diseases like osteoporosis, rickets, osteomalacia and renal osteodystrophy in India. More specifically the aims of the Society are as follows:

  1. To bring together general physicians, endocrinologist, nutritionists, nephorologists, pediatricians, pathologists, radiologists, gynecologists, rheumoatologists and orthopedic surgeons so that a multidisciplinary approach may be used for prevention and research in metabolic bone disease.
  2. To disseminate knowledge about metabolic bone diseases to the medical community by means of lectures, seminars, and publications, and to general public by the medium of magazines articles, public lectures and distribution of literature.
  3. To conduct and promote research on metabolic bone disease using epidemiological, clinical and basic science approaches.
  4. To establish centers for the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic bone disease.
  5. To work with governmental and nongovernmental agencies on public health issues related to metabolic bone diseases.
  6. Training of Indian physicians interested in metabolic bone disease.

State Chapters

Rajasthan chapter of Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research (RISBMR) was inaugurated on 21st September 2002 by hon’ble Health Minister Shri Madhav Singhji Diwan. Health Secretary Shri Parmesh Chandra was also present on this occasion.

Dr. P.K. Sethi is the president and Dr. Ranu Patni the founder secretary of this society in Rajasthan. Dr. Ranu Patni has been actively working in this field of menopause and osteoporosis since last 7 years. At the inaugural function, Dr. Ambrish Mithal, the president of The Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research, addressed an intellectual gathering of medical and non-medical personnel and highlighted important issues on osteoporosis in Indian context.

ISMBR on this occasion displayed a poster exhibition on osteoporosis especially designed by the founder members of the society for the general public and exhibition was appreciated by all. The function was a big success not because of the quality of the presentation but also because of the interaction and interest shown by the audience. For the future, RISBMR plans to tackle one significant aspect of bone and mineral disorder at mass scale while simultaneously promoting research in other areas. All persons who share the views of the society irrespective of the profession or nationality are invited to become members and contribute to the health of the people of Rajasthan.
