| Introduction :
This year for the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research
has been very fruitful one with a number of activities to achieve
the aims and objectives of the society being conducted. The society
has started functioning like a well oiled machinery with very heartening
results. The society was able to start functioning from its new
office location in Qutab Institutional Area with proper staff and
this has reflected on its activites. After having successfully conducted
our first National Conference at All India Institute of Medical
Sciences (AIIMS) on 10 November 2005 and having first won the IOF
Amgen Health Professional Awareness Grant at Bangkok, spirit of
the Society were quite high which was reflected in its functioning
in 2006.
Events Held in 2006
1. ISBMR's Courses on Metabolic Bone Diseases:
The year opened with a very structured programme "ISBMR Course
on Metabolic Bone Disease" for educating the physician about
osteoporosis in Cochin at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences
in February 2006. This set the ball rolling for the other programmes
that followed in Mumbai in May, Kolkata in September and ended with
the 2nd ISBMR National Conference being held at Jaipur on 16 November,
2006.
The attendance at all these meetings were very heartening and as
the word spread more and more physician very actively participated
wanted to be a part of the same. The programme has gained a reputation
of its own and has been largely appreciated.
2. Bone Health Quiz : One of the major event that was conducted
under the aegis of ISBMR was ISBMR's search for India's. First Bone
Health Master for which ISBMR had won a scholarship from AMGEN.
The event was very meticulously planned and conducted. The conduct
was in three round, first two rounds being held in seven cities
in India viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bangalore, Ahmedabad
and Hyderabad on 24 September, 2006. Medical students and Interns
from over 30 medical colleges from these cities, numbering over
300 teams participated. The first round threw up eight teams in
each city and the second round selected one team from each city
to participate in the Final Round in Delhi on 12 October, 2006 at
AIIMS, New Delhi. The first two rounds were written while the final
round was both visual and oral. The team from AIIMS finally won
the title "ISBMR's First Bone Health Master of India"
and are being sent to an International conference on Bone Health
by ISBMR. Dr. Rajesh Khadgawat deserves a special mention for having
organized the event so well. Dr. Vivek Arya (Ahmedabad), Dr. Sandeep
Mathur (Jaipur), Dr. Mala Dharamalingam ( Bangalore), Dr. Rakesh
Sahai (Hyderabad), Dr. Nalini Shah (Mumbai) and Dr. Satinath Mukerjee
(Kolkata) too deserve a special mention for agreeing to become anchors
in their respective cities and having done a wonderful job. Dr.
Nikhil Tandon deserves all the kudos for having conducted the finals
in a very professional manner, surpassing some of the Quiz Masters
3 . Continued Interaction with IOF Representative :
During the year we had the opportunity to have the guidance of
IOF's CEO, Dr. Daniel Naved and Head Business Communication, Mr.
Paul Spencer Sochaczewski in 13 September 2006. These meetings bonded
the two society's further and made courses corrections wherever
required. These were very useful inputs from both sides for the
ultimate goal of spreading awareness on Osteoporosis.
4. ISBMR's Sponsored International Meets on Osteoporosis
:
i) Two doctors from ISBMR attended the IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis,
held on June 2-6, 2006 at Toranto, Canada. The event was represented
by Dr. Ambrish Mithal, President, ISBMR and Dr. Rajesh Khadgawat,
Joint Secretary, ISBMR.
ii) Four members of ISBMR ( Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Dr. Nikhil Tandon,
Dr. Tushar Gupta and Dr. Tushar Bandgar) attended the Co mbined
3rd IOF Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Osteoporosis and 6th
ASM of the Australian and New Zealand Bone & Mineral Society.
iii) Two members of ISBMR (Dr. Ambrish Mithal, President, ISBMR
and Brig. Satish Kukreja (Retd.), Hony. Chief Executive Officer
of ISBMR) also attended the Special Meeting to Develop IOF Asia
Programe, held at Bangkok, Thailand.
5. ISBMR's 2nd National Conference held at Jaipur on 16
November, 2006 :
The event was organized with the active help of Rajasthan Chapter
of ISBMR and was inaugurated by Dr. Ashok Pangariah, Head and Principal
of SMS Medical College, Jaipur (Rajasthan). The participants really
enjoyed a bonanza of knowledge from major national and international
players in the field. A special thanks is due to Dr. Ranu Patni,
the General Secretary of ISBMR, Rajasthan Chapter for conducting
the event so well.
The event was preceded by a very open and useful meeting of Executive
Committee of ISBMR resulting in some momentous and far reaching
decisions.
6. Exceptional Achievement by Members :
Dr. Ambrish Mithal, our President won the award of "Doctor
of the Year" 2005.
Dr. Nikhil Tandon, our Secretary become a full Professor at All
India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at a very young age,
probably the youngest and B.C. Roy Award for Medicine Teacher. Also
elected as fellow of National Academy of Sciences.
7. New Members :
During the year 2006, Fifteen (15) New Lifetime Members have joined
the ISBMR.
