The New Bone Health Book was released on Tuesday, 16 June 2009 by Prof. R. C. Deka, Director, AIIMS,   at Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium.
 
 

6th Annual Conference of ISBMR, will be held on 13th and 14th August, 2010 at AIIMS, New Delhi. The Conference will be preceeded by IOF Certified Bone Densitometry course to be conducted on 11-12 August 2010 at INMAS, New Delhi.


ISBMR had sent Dr. Ratnesh Singh Kanwar to 19th IOF Advanced Training Course on Osteoporosis which held on February 2 – 4, 2010 in Lyon, France, to attend the course as representatives of ISBMR.


Essay competition on Osteoporosis was conducted on the eve of World Osteoporosis Day 2009 by ISBMR. Award Ceremony was held on November 19, 2009 at AIIMS, New Delhi.


5th Annual Conference of Indian Society For Bone And Mineral Research (ISBMR)
was held at HOTEL INDER RESIDENCY, UDAIPUR (RAJASTHAN) on 8th October 2009.

A Bone Densitometry Workshop and certification course
was held at P.D. Hinduja National Hospital on 6-7th October 2009.

  Dr. Ambrish Mithal's Biographical Sketch

DR. AMBRISH MITHAL

Dr. Ambrish Mithal has done MBBS and MD from G.S.V.M. Medical College, Kanpur University and is the first D.M. in Endocrinology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (1987). Presently working as Senior Consultant, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Outpatient and Inpatient service, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi he has also worked as Consultant (Endocrinoloogy) and was Member of the faculty, (Assistant Associate and subsequently Additional Professor) at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow (1988-98). He was involved in establishing the department, clinical service and the D.M. (fellowship) training program during this period. Dr. Mithal has done pioneering work in the area of bone mineral research and established and developed India’s first Bone Health Program, made possible by the installation of India’s first DXA system in 1997 at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow.

Dr. Ambrish Mithal has a brilliant academic record winning several gold medals. He has also won several awards including : Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research, 2002. Award for outstanding paper, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Adult Bone and Mineral Working Group, 2004.Boy Frame Award and more recently Delhi Medical Association’s “Doctor of the Year 2005”. He received fellowship in the Endocrine Hypertension Division, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School Boston for studies relating to calcium receptor expression and its correlation with calcium responsiveness in cultured parathyroid cells: cloning of the receptor from the rabbit kidney: identification of receptor transcrips in the calcitonin producing cells: expression of Gs alpha subunits mRNA in the bovine parathyroid and other. He has also been awarded a Japan International Cooperation Agency fellowship to visit several universities in Japan and received special training in bone mass estimation techniques as well as bone histomorphometry at the Kawasaki Medical School, Yokohama medical School and Nagoya University Medical School. Dr. Mithal is a visiting faculty with Endocrine Hypertension Division, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and Bone Mineral Division, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit.

Dr. Mithal is associated with a number of professional bodies and has been their office bearer. He is President, Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research , Member, W.H.O. Global Task Force on Osteoporosis , Member, Bone and Joint Decade Executive (WHO-NAN, India): and Member, Scientific Advisory Committee, International Osteoporosis Foundation (ISBMR). He is associated with numerous other professional bodies.

He initiated and launched ISBMR Program on Physician Awareness 2005 – 2007. This is a unique initiative and several Asian countries are adopting the model for which his advice has been sought (IOF Worldwide Congress – Bank, September 27-30, 2005).

Dr. Mithal’s major area of research interest is bone and mineral metabolism. Some of his more significant contributions, of direct relevance to the Indian Scene, are : Study of bone metabolism in skeletal fluoride toxicity, Osteoporosis: defining BMD standards in the Indian population, Primary hyperparathyroidism in Indian, and Vitamin D deficiency in Indians. He has published more than 40 papers in reputed journals, reviewed books and written chapters in several publications.
