| There's hope
for osteoporosis patients
The name itself could give you the clue to its cure. Osteoporosis,
meaning ‘porous bones’ is a condition in which
the bones become fragile and weak, increasing the risk of
fractures, especially in the wrist, hip and spine. Any bone
can be affected, but the most serious concerns are fractures
of the hip and spine. Osteoporosis causes more than 1.5 million
fractures each year, including more than 300,000 hip fractures
and 700,000 vertebral fractures. One in two women over the
age of 50 and one in eight men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related
fracture in their lifetime. The treatment essentially has
to be from two sides — one which helps reduce bone loss
and the other helping bone formation. But first let’s
understand what’s with our bones and what gets wrong.
Says Dr Ambrish Mithal, senior endocrinologist, Indraprastha
Apollo, New Delhi: “Calcium plays an important role
in transmitting signals to nerves and muscles and is important
in regulating heart rate, muscle contractions, blood pressure
and other body functions. |
