IOF Regional 1st Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting was held at the Raffles City Convention Centre in Singapore from10-13 December 2010. Over 1000 Doctors, researchers and other health professionals from around the world participated actively in the event. With its well developed clinical programme, the meeting turned out to be a fertile venue for education, innovation and collaboration on Osteoporotic fractures which are a serious health problem in the Asia Pacific region.
The meeting was preceded by a unique Public Forum and the four day event provided an exceptional learning environment which will eventually lead to improved patient care throug
hout the region. Over 200 research abstracts from the meeting were published in the field’s leading journal, Osteoporosis International.
The Asian Audit was presented by Dr Ambrish Mithal (Chief Advisor ISBMR), Scientific Co-Chair of the meeting who at the opening ceremony said “We hope that these annual meetings will help to stimulate research in the region. Young scientists in particular will benefit from this high-profile venue in which to present their research findings to an international audience.” At the CNS meeting, Indian region was prominently represented by Dr.Raman Marwaha (President ISBMR) & Brig Satish Kukreja (CEO ISBMR).At the main meeting ISBMR was represented by more than 110 Doctors, including Drs. Nikhil Tandon,Rajesh Khadgawat,Dinesh Dhanwal,Mythri Shankar,Sushil Gupta and others The program agenda of the meeting comprised of - Meet the Experts sessions (where one on one interaction was made possible with the experts in specific domains), Satellite Symposium (where vendors and other sponsors could interact), Poster sessions (for exhibits of selected abstracts) , Oral communication ( Select articles) and an Orthopedic and a Diagnostic Round Table. Several Plenary lectures also covered all the aspects of Osteoporosis in significant detail. A large number of visitors came to the ISBMR stall which displayed both the scientific and awareness building activities done by the organisation.
Researchers from China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka and Taiwan were recipients of the International Osteoporosis Foundation's (IOF) Young Investigators Awards. The award winners were selected from among the 200 abstract submitted to the meeting by young investigators who received 1000 USD and the opportunity to present their research at a high profile oral communications session. The article "Hip Fracture Patients in India Have Vitamin D Deficiency and Secondary Hyperparathyroidism" by S.K. Sahoo, D.K. Dhanwal, V.K. Gautam was one among them.
